Typology of Grey Literature

Working Group for Grey Literature Typology
The mission of the Working Group for Grey Literature Typology is to develop a vocabulary of the types of grey literature that will be based on existing research and examination of the typologies that are already used for grey literature resources. The aim of this group is to bring together the experts in the domains of grey literature, knowledge organisation systems, and semantic web technologies to work collaboratively on the vocabulary with the long-term perspective of its further evolution in mind.

NRGL Typology
When the classification scheme of the documents for NRGL was created, it was based on the classification of the systems GreyNet, ASEP, RIV and the working version of OpenSIGLE. During the analysis of the lists of document types we have discovered that these typologies contain various aspects, such as events (arranging, organising), types of events (conferences, speeches), forms (presentations – notices), processing – (translations, outputs), contents (political documents, legal texts), locations (domestic, foreign), format types (e-texts, numeric data). Therefore we have decided to create a classification scheme that will be structured to various levels in order to define various aspects more precisely. The scheme is processed in a text version as well as schematically in mind maps. The classification scheme will be projected to the metadata format NRGL. We also present further development of the scheme on the basis of changes in the setting in the field of the grey literature.

During the analysis we have also discovered that there exist the same varieties of the same item in English within the GreyNet classification. Therefore we have compared individual terms in the English language with the Czech terminology database for librarianship and information science (TDKIV) of the National Library of the Czech Republic and we have proposed recommendations for processing of other terms.
